1. The Bone Collector

Denzel Washington, Queen Latifah, and Angelina Jolie star in The Bone Collector. It is a story about a New York City Police forensic team investigating a serial killer. Denzel Washington does a great job in his role as a quadriplegic forensic expert, while Queen Latifah and Angelina Jolie put their boots to the ground in solving the horrifying crimes.

2. King of New York

King of New York is one of those suspenseful movies that you love to love. With an all-star cast including Christopher Walken, Laurence Fishburne, Wesley Snipes, and Steve Buscemi, King of New York is the ultimate bad-guy-turned-good story. The narrative focuses on Frank White, who after ten years in prison returns to New York to find that new gangs are now in charge. Frank wants to take back his power but then decides to run for mayor. That doesn’t sit well with his gang mates, and drama ensues.

3. Shaft

Shaft is one of the best-known Black thriller movies. Featuring Samuel L. Jackson, Vanessa Williams, and Christian Bale, Shaft is the story of a police officer who is attempting to protect a witness to a murder while bringing the murderer to justice. Little does he know, the witness was paid off, making protecting her all the more troubling.

4. Candyman

In Candyman, Helen is a graduate student who studies urban legends and folklore. She learns about Candyman, a villain who has a hook for a hand. The story goes that if you look in a mirror and say his name five times, he appears behind you and murders you. Dozens of deaths are linked to the folklore villain, but is the story true? That’s what Helen set out to discover. Starring Vanessa Williams and Tony Todd, this is one Black thriller you don’t want to miss.

5. No Good Deed

Starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, No Good Deed is a suspenseful movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The film follows Terri, whose husband is out of town, leaving her alone with their children. When a stranger knocks at the door and asks to use the phone, Terri can’t imagine what will happen next. But when she spots a gun on the stranger as he plays with her children, the evening takes a turn for the worst.

6. Ma

Ma stars Octavia Spencer, who is a middle-aged woman who befriends a group of local teenagers. She allows the group to host a party in her basement but gives the group a set of house rules. Her suspicious rules raise eyebrows, but the teens host the event anyway. Soon, Ma becomes obsessed and there are no limits to what she will do to stay ‘cool’ in the eyes of the teenagers.

7. Us

Us is a true Black thriller featuring unbelievable twists and turns. Even the movie trailer was enough to give some people nightmares. Starring Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, Us tells the story of a family who travels to their summer home only to meet with their evil doppelgangers. Will the family survive their summer vacation?

8. Call Time

Call Time: The Finale is reminiscent of the horror movies of the 1990s. Released in 2021, the film follows a group of film students who set out to film the perfect scary movie. When people disappear, the crew realizes that they have become the stars of the show and not the first group to experience bone-chilling terror.
